ARTIST STATEMENT

With its skyline, streets, parks, rivers, bridges, triumphs and tragedies, New York, the city of my birth, is the subject matter of my work. I am educated in American Zen Buddhist and trained in calligraphy and Asian principles of landscape painting. I seek to find the soul of New York that lays hidden behind its mighty structures of commerce and material vitality. My paintings are visual metaphors, perceptions of inner realities rather than realistic renderings of place.

"I Dream of a Gentler City" was painted in reaction to the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Form dissolves to reveal a hidden reality. In this evocative space one finds the paradox of New York City-a compassionate strength that comes from a deep, spiritual center. This work is influenced by the principles of perspective found in Asian paintings.

"Snowfall in New York" captures the hushed silence of the city. As snowflakes soften the majesty of skyscrapers, the city turns inward to its center of peace and reveals yet another paradox. A highly energized metropolis can also be quietly reflective. In this work, I am influenced by the woodblock prints of falling snow by Hiroshige.

In "Chrysler Building at Night," crystal points of light pierce the curtain of dusk that descends on the city. Sequin-studded bridges and roads connect the life of its inhabitants. I am reminded of Indira's Net, a visual metaphor of the kinship of all life, where each jewel is reflection of the luminosity of the other and all are bonded in a cosmic connection.
