Artist Statment
The aftermath of many art institutions leaves mechanical made students that have created the exhausted popularized mass productions of an imitation, Mikako Fujiwara said, “I inevitably became a dropout.” Her little known figurative style of oil painting integrates a sense of American tradition with a Japanese heritage.

Mikako was born in Japan, Kyoto. She studied fine art following Kenichiro Takasaki and Yukio Nakata in Japan, along with psychology at Doshisha University in Kyoto. She’s received several awards for her paintings in Japan and Italy. Later moved to Michigan in 2002 obtaining a BA in art at Saginaw Valley State University. Moved to New York in September of 2004 to find what she’s looking for. Searching cultural perspectives different than her own in a place like New York City, where cultures blaze with one another.

Mikako said, “I draw and paint for my spirit. form, line… everything that expresses your light and darkness regardless of materials, subjects, you cannot disguise yourself when you draw. It’s a severe but truly beautiful world.”

“People like to use the word ‘inspiration,’ but I doubt that word. I try to use my courage for my creation instead of inspiration. Inspiration is for viewers: for the painter, patience is the most important thing.”
